Chief of Police, David B. NiedermeierAs your Police Chief, my goal is to maintain the streets and neighborhoods of the City Hazel Park or make improvements when necessary to ensure safe, tranquil and desirable community.  I work toward providing the finest attainable police services to this community. While providing this service, I pledge to do so with the highest level of respect, ethics, resourcefulness, professionalism and vigor.

I am a veteran career police officer with the City of Hazel Park Police Department.  I have ascended the ranks within the department and held numerous positions, which include:

  • Worked the patrol division as a patrol officer for several years after graduation from the police academy;
  • Department's investigator in the Youth Bureau;
  • Promoted to the rank of sergeant; returned to the patrol division as the supervisor;
  • As a detective sergeant, spent numerous years in the detective bureau investigating a wide range of crimes;
  • Promoted to lieutenant; returned to road patrol as the shift commander, and
  • Promoted to Chief of Police in 1999.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree from Wayne State University in Criminal Justice.
  • Extensive in-service continued education which partially includes; Crime Prevention, Evidence Technician, Nationally Certified Arson Investigator, 4 State Advanced Training Certificates of Accreditation in Law Enforcement, and Criminal Profiling and Police Executive Training for Chiefs.
  • School of Police Staff and Command from Eastern Michigan University.

Partial Listing of Departmental Awards

Bestowed in accordance with the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police include:
  • 3 individual Certificates of Merit for armed robbery arrests; Life Saving Award;
  • Commendation for an armed robbery arrest;
  • Unit Commendation for a breaking & entering arrest;
  • Departmental Citation for Officer of the Year Award - 1994;
  • Safe Driving Award (5 year);
  • Safe Driving Award (10 year), and 
  • Numerous letters of commendation from various police chiefs, citizens, prosecutors, other police departments as well as other governmental and private organizations.
I am honored to be the Chief of Police.  The position holds numerous challenges coupled with many opportunities to make positive change.  I have inspiring visions for both the Police Department and this City. I intend to invest my energy, knowledge and efforts into making both models of excellence within the Metropolitan Detroit Area and a benchmark within the State of Michigan.
